On September 17, we celebrated a significant milestone in expanding our footprint with the groundbreaking ceremony for Challenger Learning Center in Northeast Alabama. The event attracted several hundred attendees, including business owners, educators, elected officials, and enthusiastic students eager to learn about this Center’s exciting future.

A Vision for Alabama

Governor Kay Ivey was a speaker at the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of the Center for both NortheastnAlabama and the entire state. “Success in one part of the state lifts up the rest of the state,” Ivey stated. “This is a good thing for Northeast Alabama, but it’s a great thing for the state of Alabama.”

Tony Smith, Chairman of the Advisory Council leading the initiative, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “Alabama needs a Challenger Learning Center,” Smith asserted. “This Center will not just be a field trip destination; it’s a hub for engaging, real-world learning that applies STEM concepts in exciting and challenging ways. We look forward to the impact it will have on our region.”

Inspiring Future Generations

Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, our Founding Chair and honorary chair of the future Center’s fundraising campaign, shared her personal connection to this initiative. Having grown up in Alabama, she recounted her journey from student to educator while supporting her husband Challenger Shuttle Commander Richard “Dick” Scobee.

Speaking directly to the students at the event, she encouraged them to dream big, stating, “One of you will be the age to take that step, to be the first person on Mars.”

Workforce Development

The excitement was palpable as local leaders, including Senator Andrew Jones, House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey, and Rainbow City Mayor Joe Taylor, shared their thoughts on the Center’s potential.

Senator Jones highlighted the critical role of education in workforce development: “It’s all about the kids, because today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce. They need to process the skills that prepare them for high-demand jobs with good pay and a chance for career advancement.”

Dr. Mackey echoed this sentiment, expressing hope that the Center will inspire future scientists and engineers to thrive within Alabama’s evolving economy.

Looking Ahead

The Challenger Learning Center will be situated on a five-acre site near Rainbow Middle School, across from the Etowah Mega Sports Complex. It aims to serve students from Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, DeKalb, Etowah, Marshall, Randolph, St. Clair, Talladega, Jefferson counties, and surrounding areas, with plans to welcome students in 2026.

The Center in Northeast Alabama is set to enhance the educational landscape and bolster workforce development efforts throughout the state. The overwhelming support from the community, along with the dedication of the Advisory Council and the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama, is a testament to the collective commitment to transforming the lives of students for decades to come.

We are excited about what lies ahead at Challenger Learning Center of Northeast Alabama. Stay tuned for more updates as we progress toward opening this new Center!
