AIAA Receives Challenger-7 Recognition
Washington, D.C. — May 22, 2026 – As part of its 40th anniversary, Challenger Center is proud to award the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) the Challenger-7 Recognition, a national honor celebrating organizations whose work reflects the spirit, vision, and values of the Challenger 51-L crew.
The Challenger-7 Recognition is a tribute offered to organizations that embody the crew’s commitment to exploration, learning, and inspiration, and a celebration of those advancing this mission for future generations. Throughout 2026, Challenger Center will continue to honor the legacy of the Challenger crew by uplifting several leading organizations in STEM education that are inspiring curiosity, advancing education, and empowering students to reach for the stars.
Challenger Center is recognizing AIAA for its leadership in advancing aerospace education. Through its multiple scholarships for high schoolers, mentor-matching program, and outreach efforts to connect interested students with careers in aerospace, AIAA has demonstrated an enduring commitment to inspiring the next generation of innovators.
For the past five years, Challenger Center and AIAA have partnered on the Trailblazing STEM Educator Award (TSEA), a prestigious national honor recognizing exceptional K–12 educators annually who go above and beyond to engage students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Each year, the winners of the TSEA showcase the extraordinary creativity and dedication educators bring to their classrooms to empower students through hands-on, real-world learning experiences. Together, Challenger Center and AIAA are elevating the teaching profession and expanding access to transformative STEM learning—ensuring that more students across the country are equipped with the skills and inspiration to pursue futures in aerospace and beyond.
“Over the past five years, our partnership with AIAA has been truly exceptional,” said Mike Kincaid, President and Executive Director of Challenger Center. “Through the Trailblazing STEM Educator Award, we’ve been able to recognize and support incredible teachers who are shaping the next generation of explorers and problem solvers. Our missions are deeply aligned, and we’re proud to honor AIAA as a Challenger-7 honoree for its leadership and impact.”
“AIAA is deeply honored to receive the Challenger-7 Recognition,” said Clay Mowry, CEO of AIAA. “We are committed to inspiring students to pursue STEM education opportunities that can lead to exciting careers in aerospace. We see how powerful that inspiration can be through our partnership with Challenger Center. Together, we’re expanding what’s possible for the next generation – and we believe the future of aerospace is bright!”
The Challenger-7 Recognition was presented during ASCEND 2026, AIAA’s flagship immersive event focused on accelerating humanity’s off-world future, including advancements in space infrastructure, technology, and policy. It was a moment to celebrate the strength of the partnership and the shared commitment to STEM education.
Through the Challenger-7 Recognition, Challenger Center continues to honor the legacy of the Challenger crew by uplifting organizations that are expanding opportunity, inspiring curiosity, and empowering students and educators to reach new heights.
