Following the Sun, Together

On May 1, 2026, something remarkable happened across the Challenger Center network.

From the moment students in Rochester, NY, launched the first mission of the day, it began a wave of discovery that moved across the country as each Center handed off the helm to another.

As the ISS travels around our planet, astronauts aboard see the sun rise and set 16 times a day. Like these astronauts, Challenger Learning Centers across the country connected to one another through the Follow the Sun experience. Students stepped into mission control and spacecrafts, took their positions, and solved problems under pressure. But unlike a typical mission, they then communicated with other crews of students hundreds of miles away before passing the mission forward to the next team waiting on the horizon.

What started as a continuous national mission quickly became a living demonstration of collaboration. And most importantly, it reminded us that exploration has always been a shared journey.

“Mission Control, Do You Read Me?”

Throughout the day, participating Centers flew their missions and virtually handed control to the next Center in a chain, mirroring the coordination and teamwork required in real-world space exploration.

Students got to know one another—announced mission updates, shared challenges they had overcome, and encouraged the next crew before passing the mission along. In simulators across the country, students who had never met came together as part of the same mission.

From state to state and time zone to time zone, the mission continued uninterrupted. Participating Centers included:

Passing On the Mission

At every Challenger Learning Center, students experience the excitement and intensity of a space mission while making critical decisions, communicating under pressure, and adapting to unexpected problems. Follow the Sun added something new.

Students could see they were part of a nationwide chain of exploration. Someone else was counting on them, and they were contributing to something larger than themselves.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy and the founding of Challenger Center. Our mission is to continue the legacy of that courageous crew by connecting students to experiences that spark passion for STEM fields and inspire today’s children to see themselves as a part of our shared future.

That is what made Follow the Sun special. It wasn’t just about space exploration. It was about connection.

“Thank you, Colorado Springs. We are proud to represent our Central Texas Community and this National Challenger Learning Center collaboration for the Follow the Sun 40th anniversary mission.” — Student Mission Specialist, Challenger Learning Center at the Scobee Education Center, San Antonio College

Watching students connect in real time was a powerful reminder that discovery is never a solo journey. In each handoff, students waved, encouraged one another, celebrated successes, and stepped confidently into the responsibility of carrying the mission forward.

Looking to the Horizon

As Challenger Center celebrates 40 years of inspiring the next generation through immersive STEM learning, Follow the Sun captured the heart of what the network has always represented: curiosity, collaboration, and hope for the future.

The Challenger 7 believed deeply in the power of education and exploration. Forty years later, students across the country are still carrying the spirit forward together

On May 1, 2026, they solved problems together.

They communicated across communities.

They trusted one another.

They explored together.

They discovered a powerful truth.

The future moves forward when we pass knowledge, opportunity, and inspiration from one generation to the next…just like following the sun.
